System Of A Down: Hypnotize
***
Double albums are rarely a good idea, so System Of A Down have cunningly released Hypnotize five months after their last album Mezmerize. Taken collectively, there’s one great album between the two — but the ‘new’ album lacks the stand-out operatic rock single that its predecessor had in Bring Your Own Bombs. You end up wondering which of Hypnotize’s songs could replace the less successful tracks on Mezmerize, though it still boasts the same diverse approach to songwriting — where pop, furiously staccato riffs and gipsy-thrash exist in the same three-minute songs. They’re still leagues ahead of any other metal band but releasing albums in this fashion hamstrings them.
